Choosing a diamond painting heroes & franchises kit

Characters from the same franchise can look very different on canvas. A cartoon scene has big areas of flat color, while a movie poster has fine shading. Knowing which one you are buying helps you pick the right size and drill shape, and it saves you from starting a design that is more demanding than you expected.

Cartoon characters for a first kit

Stitch, Pikachu and Tom and Jerry are drawn with bold outlines and large blocks of color. These areas are quick to fill and easy to follow, so they suit a first project. Our children's favorites work the same way. The Bluey and Bingo scenes, such as Bedtime Story or Building a Sandcastle, and the SpongeBob and Patrick scenes at the Krusty Krab or Goo Lagoon Beach all rely on simple shapes and clear colors. If you want to browse the whole style, see our cartoon diamond painting kits.

Movie and fantasy posters for more detail

Harry Potter, Marvel and Star Wars designs carry more shading and smaller details, especially on faces. Choose a larger canvas for these so each face stays sharp. Square drills help here, since they sit edge to edge and give cleaner outlines. Our Harry Potter diamond painting page lists every design in that franchise, and it is the largest group in the range.

Round or square drills

• Round drills: they go on faster and have a sparkly, beaded look.
• Square drills: they leave fewer gaps and give a smoother finish on faces and lettering.

Both shapes are offered on our kits, so you can match the drill to the character. A rounded, playful cartoon looks good in either. A portrait with a serious expression usually benefits from square drills, because the straight edges keep eyes and mouths crisp.

Picking a size

A small canvas can be finished in a few evenings. A larger one takes longer but holds more detail, which matters for crowded scenes with several characters, such as SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy together in Bikini Bottom. If a design has a lot of text, small props or several faces, size up. If it shows one character against a simple background, a smaller canvas is enough.

What is in the box

Each kit comes with everything you need to start: the adhesive canvas with the design printed on it, the drills in your chosen shape, the applicator pen, the tray and the wax. You peel back the protective film a section at a time, pick up drills with the wax-tipped pen and press them onto the symbols. Working in small sections keeps the adhesive clean and stops dust from settling on the part you have not reached yet.

Franchises in this range

Harry Potter has the most designs, followed by Pokémon, Disney, Japanese manga, Gorjuss and Betty Boop. Stitch, Marvel, Star Wars and Tom and Jerry each have their own selection too. Newer additions include Bluey, SpongeBob, Peppa Pig, PJ Masks, Miraculous, Dora the Explorer, Masha and the Bear and Rubble & Crew. For a single brand, our Disney diamond painting page narrows the choice quickly.

Bluey scenes

The Bluey designs follow the family through everyday play. You will find Bluey and Bingo Playing Keepy Uppy, Riding Scooters in the Park, Blanket Fort with Torch and Camping Under the Stars, along with scenes that include Bandit and Chilli, such as Bluey Bingo and Bandit Dancing in the Living Room and the Family Hug on the Couch. Seasonal choices like Building a Snowman and Jumping in Autumn Leaves make a good match for the time of year when you start.

SpongeBob scenes

SpongeBob and Patrick appear in a wide range of settings: Jellyfishing in Bikini Bottom, Blowing Giant Bubbles, Driving the Red Boat, Ice Skating at Christmas and the Underwater Birthday Party. Some designs add more characters, like Squidward, Sandy, Gary or Mr. Krabs with gold coins. Group scenes have more areas to fill, so they reward a larger canvas and a bit more patience.

Dora the Explorer scenes

Dora and Boots designs take the pair through the jungle, across a rope bridge, up into the snowy mountains and out to sea on a pirate ship. Others stay calm, such as Dora and Boots in a Flower Garden or Under a Rainbow Sky. Sky, water and foliage are often drawn in smooth color areas, which makes them pleasant to fill row by row.

Pokémon, manga and other favorites

Pokémon is the second largest group, and Japanese manga, Gorjuss and Betty Boop each bring a distinct look. Manga and Gorjuss designs tend to focus on faces and clothing, so check the size before ordering. If you already know you want a single franchise, the dedicated pages for each one list every design in one place.

Tips for a clean result

• Work from one edge of the canvas and uncover only the area you are filling.
• Keep the wax tip fresh so each drill picks up and releases easily.
• Sort drills by symbol in the tray before you start a new color.
• Press each drill flat so rows stay straight and the surface catches the light evenly.
• Store the unused part of the canvas flat with the film in place.

Kits as gifts

A kit featuring a child's or fan's favorite franchise is an easy present. Dora and Boots scenes, like the Hot Air Balloon Adventure or the Birthday Piñata Party, work well for younger crafters with an adult helping. Put 3 kits in your basket and the cheapest is free, which makes it simple to buy for a family or to treat yourself to a second design.

Frequently asked questions

Which character kit is best for a beginner?

Pick a cartoon design with large blocks of flat color, such as Stitch, Pikachu, Bluey or SpongeBob. The areas are easy to follow and quick to fill. Movie posters with fine shading are better once you are comfortable with the pen and wax.

Should I choose round or square drills for characters?

Round drills go on faster and look sparkly. Square drills sit tightly together and give cleaner faces and outlines, so they suit detailed Harry Potter, Marvel or Star Wars designs. Either shape is available on our kits.

What comes in a character diamond painting kit?

Every kit includes the pre-printed adhesive canvas, round or square drills of your choice, the applicator pen, the tray and the wax. You do not need to buy anything else to begin.

Which size keeps the most detail?

A larger canvas keeps more detail, especially for faces and busy scenes. A small canvas is finished in a few evenings and works well for simple cartoon designs with fewer colors.

Is there a discount when buying several kits?

Yes. Put 3 kits in your basket and the cheapest is free. This works across franchises, so you can mix Disney, Pokémon and Bluey designs in one order.
